We've been doing an Ugly Pumpkin lesson for the past couple of years. During this time, we discovered many of our kids did not know what a squash was. To help them understand more about squash, we created this mini vocabulary lesson. Just click the picture below to download "The Ugly Pumpkin Mini Companion" for FREE! Another Friday FreeBEE!
It's that time of the week again! Friday FreeBEE day! This week we are sharing our "The Ugly Pumpkin Mini Companion." The Ugly Pumpkin by Dave Horowitz is one of our favorite books and our kids enjoy listening to it. If you've never heard this book, check it out on YouTube. It's a great story about a lonely pumpkin that no one wanted. He wanders around looking for a place to fit in and gets a big surprise! We think once you hear this story, it will be one of your favorites, too.

Trick or Treat!
Trick or treat, trick or treat! Give me something good to eat! The other SLPs and I love chocolate. We need our daily chocolate fix to get us through the day. In honor of Halloween this week, we decided to share our candy addiction with our students by letting them Trick or Treat during therapy. To make the activity more interesting, we came up with this SmartBoard Trick or Treat Game. After taking a speech turn, the students spin the spinner to see which candy they get to pick. The spinner is divided into eight sections: chocolate, lollipops, gum, hard candy, and 4 sections of monsters. If the spinner stops on one of the sections with candy, the student gets to pick that item from our bucket. If the spinner stops on a monster, then the student gets no candy. We picked up some inexpensive treat bags at The Dollar Tree for our students to put their candy in. You could also use a sandwich bag if you don't have any treat bags handy. This is a great motivating activity for the students. It also allows you to get in lots of therapy practice. We will gladly share this SmartBoard game with you. To get this game for FREE, please follow our blog and comment below that you'd like to have this game and we will email it to you!

Boo!
Things are getting scary around here! We are gearing up for Halloween and making some ghostly creations this week. Join the fun by making these cute ghost necklaces with your students. Girls and boys alike enjoy taking a speech turn then stringing a bead. This activity is not only good for practicing speech, but helps with fine motor skills as well :)
We used a sharpie to write articulation words on the back of the ghosts for students to practice at home.

Fire Safety Week
While planning our lessons for Fire Safety Week, we were
searching the web to find out why Dalmatians are always associated with firefighters. We came across this cute story on aplacetolovedogs.tumblr.com and it
sounded just like an answer we would get from one of our students -- A fire
truck with a Dalmatian sitting in the front raced past a grandfather and his
grandchildren. The grandchildren began
arguing about the responsibilities of the dog. The first child declared,
“Dalmatians keep the people away from the fire.” The next child replied, “I
think he is good luck charm for the firemen.” However, having the best
understanding of dogs, the last child ended the argument, “No, the firemen use
the dog to find the fire hydrants!” So with this story in mind, we designed a
cute, quick, easy activity to complete during therapy and then send home
for homework. After taking a speech turn, the students used paint markers to
paint spots on their Dalmatians. Pictured below is an example of the activity.
Also, in the picture is another easy art activity for Fire Safety Week.
If you would like either of these sheets, let us know in the comment section :) |
Our students have had a great time playing our “Find the
Fire Truck” SmartBoard Game. This game can be used as a reinforcer for any speech and
language skill. It is also perfect for any subject, including sight words, math
facts, vocabulary, etc. Students take turns putting out a fire by touching a
flame & making it fade out. The student who finds the fire truck is the
winner. The best part of the game is the siren sound effect that plays when the
fire truck is found! Click the link below to download the game “FREE” from our
Teachers Pay Teachers store!
The Fire Safety Assembly at our school was so entertaining and educational! As a "Thank You" to the firemen for visiting our school, our students colored pictures and wrote letters to the firemen. We found these super cute pages for free! Thanks, Seusstastic.blogspot!
